About the Koori Access Project
In 2003, the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO), consulted with a number of Indigenous health workers to identify factors that prevented access to drug information from the Australian Drug Foundations' DrugInfo Clearinghouse services.
With funding from the Premier's Drug Prevention Council, a Koori project worker was employed at the ADF in January 2004 to implement the recommendations arising from the consultation exercise. This current phase of the project aimed to build capacity among Indigenous communities by increasing the relevance and accessibility of DrugInfo Clearinghouse information and services.
Specific project outcomes that were implemented include:
- Design and development of an Indigenous webpage for the DrugInfo Clearinghouse website
- Audit of computer hardware and software availability for relevant indigenous workers
- Installation of four computers in areas of identified need to facilitate worker and community access to DrugInfo Clearinghouse website and services.
- Provision of training to Indigenous workers to support the use of information services and cross cultural training for ADF staff
- Enhancement of the DrugInfo Clearinghouse Resource Centre collection to include a comprehensive range of Indigenous resources
- Marketing and promotion of DrugInfo Clearinghouse services to Indigenous workers and communities.
The Koori Access Project Advisory Committee comprising key stakeholders and workers in the field provided advice and guidance to the project. Consultation and communication with workers in indigenous communities is ongoing.
